Senator Judy Warnick has dropped a fake meat bill, SB 6329. View the bill here: http://lawfilesext.leg.wa.gov/biennium/2019-20/Pdf/Bills/Senate%20Bills/6329.pdf
A food is considered misbranded under RCW 15.130.210 if it is a meat analogue and (a) its labeling or advertisement utilizes an identifiable meat term; and (b) the labeling or advertisement does not have a disclaimer in the same font, style, and size immediately before or after the identifiable meat term, stating “this product does not contain meat.”
Here is the Wiki that gives a definition of meat analogue:
“A meat analogue, also called meat alternative, meat substitute, mock meat, faux meat, imitation meat, vegetarian meat, fake meat or vegan meat”
Fake meat & fake meat labeling will be front-and-center for the WCA this year during Washington legislative session, which began January 13. Throughout the session, WCA staff & our lobbyist, Mark Streuli will keep members updated through our weekly legislative newsletters going to WCA members, as well as our WCA social media platforms.
